UVSC Session Report
Monday, July 8, 2019 (Session #235)
(authored by BJ)

This week, five of us played 12 total games. Iliana bingoed with the
word PORTANCE, which I challenged, not knowing it. It is valid in both
lexicons, and according to the OED, it is a chiefly poetic word meaning
"Carriage, bearing, demeanour; conduct, behavior." It derives from the
French, where it describes the action of carrying. The word 'transport'
also takes this carrying meaning from the same French word, but with
PORTANCE the carrying is not of a physical object, but of one's self.
DEPORTMENT has a very similar meaning and etymology as PORTANCE.

David was the only player in the 500 club this week, doing so twice with
scores of 521 and 506. No doubt those scores were partly due to two of
his high non-bingos, SOX (61) and OX (56). The high bingo of the week
was a phony by me that I won't mention (it was very plausible, I
swear!). After two very rough games to start the session, Ellen
overcame her sadness, and played the bingo OVERSAD, as she beat me in a
rematch. Marilyn was on the bingo train, getting down TRAINEE and
DETRAIN on her way to winning two out of three games.

Our other bingos included DRAGNET, OLESTRA, AUDITEES, MANGLES, DAFFIEST,
RUINOUS, SCALENE, RAISINGS, DEUTERON (the nucleus of heavy hydrogen),
TOLARJEV (plural of TOLAR, a monetary unit of Slovenia; I was
super-excited to find that one!), LARIATS (a LARIAT is a lasso), VISITER
(more commonly spelled VISITOR, of course), SMARTIES, SCANTER, GLITZIER,
UMPTEEN, WARISON, LAPSERS, ORCHIDS, STRINGY, OUTRATE, RELANDED.
