UVSC Session Report
Monday, July 1, 2019 (Session #234)
(authored by BJ)

We were happy to have Don join us from Manchester this week, and as
usual he taught us some new words. He played STIBINE, which is a
colorless, very poisonous gas, and UNITAGES, which--as Margaret
observed--seems like just another word for UNITS. According to the OED,
unitage means "An amount regarded or expressed in terms of units". They
give four citations, all of which appear to be from the health-related
fields. For example: "Just one small ‘Children's Size’ capsule each day
supplies the full weekly requirements of vitamins A, B, D and G in the
exact unitages required." and also "Results were expressed
quantitatively as a unitage (U/ml) according to the manufacturer's
instructions." So I gather that it is used to refer to amounts in units
generally, though it seems like a subtle distinction.

David and I played a back-and-forth battle of a game that ended up being
a 395-395 tie, which was the first of 2019 and just the seventh ever at
UVSC. In a different game, David set a club record for the highest
non-bingo play in a TWL game, scoring 101 for QUEER placed with the Q on
a TLS and extending to the DWS, also forming QI and UN. The Q accounted
for 90 of the 101 points! Margaret and Ellen went head-to-head in their
final contests of the night. While Ellen found a bingo early with
ENTITLE, Margaret had a strong game, coming back with two bingos
(TRAINEE and SADDEST). It wasn't quite enough, though, as Ellen was
able to hold on for the win.

Other bingos seen tonight included AUTOTUNE#, SEDARIM (plural of SEDER),
CANNIEST, VARIOLES, GLUTAEI# (plural of GLUTAEUS#, another spelling of
the GLUTEUS muscle), FAINTER, CABALISM, GREENIE, ENCLOUD#, LAMINAR,
ISATINE, WHETTING, VOLTAGES, RESTORAL, NELLIES, IDEATES, LOANEES,
SIENITE, ARENOSE, BONNIES, SAUTERNE (a sweet white wine), BRIGHTER, and
INVITEES.
