UVSC Session Report Sunday, May 5, 2019 (Session #226) (authored by BJ) This week our club met at the Norwich Public Library on Sunday night. It was our first time at that venue and our first time in 226 sessions that we didn't meet on a Monday. We will, however, be back to our normal venue and day next time, as the changes were only due to a temporary unavailability. Nonetheless, the NPL Community Room is a very nice venue and a great backup location to have. Don was able to join Margaret, Ellen, Iliana and I, and he and Margaret had the top showings. Margaret was 2-0 for the second consecutive week, and Don was 5-1, losing only his final game while playing two simultaneously. In one interesting ending against Don, I played the bingo KLEPTOS to take a 50-ish point lead, drawing the last seven tiles out of the bag including the second blank. Don responded with MOATLIKE through my K for the out-bingo and the win. It was one of those rare situations where a non-bingo was the better play; I could have played just KLEPTO for 54 points and left one tile in the bag. Don still could have bingoed (with METALISE), but his lead would have been small and I likely could have scored well enough to win with my new tiles. Oh, hindsight! As for individual plays, I managed the high non-bingo of 72 points for the interesting word ZOBUS#; a ZOBU# is hybrid between a yak and a domestic cow, and has numerous other similar alternate names (all either Collins-only or in neither lexicon), the most common of which appears to be ZO# (according to the Google Books Ngram Viewer). The high bingo was Don's aforementioned MASTLIKE for 95. The rest of the bingo pile included INSANIE# (an old word for insanity), PRICIER, FELTING, BLASTIE (a Scottish term for a wretched or ugly little creature), NEAREST, GLARIER (more GLARY, full of glare), TENSILE, SCARTED (to SCART is to scratch or scrape), OLEINES (OLEINE is the liquid portion of a fat), REGALES, FOCUSED, PARENTED, ANTIRIOT, LAITIES, REPROBES, LIGNEOUS (resembling wood), MANGLED, INCITERS, COURTERS, TREMBLE, DISEASE, TEASING, SHARING, IRONERS, INBREEDS, and SERIATE. Shown below are the gang at the Norwich Public Library, the KLEPTOS/MASTLIKE game (TWL) between Don and BJ, and a ZOBU#/ZOBO#/ZO#/ZHO#/DZO#/DZHO#/DSO#/YAKOW#.
