UVSC Session Report
January 28, 2019 (Session #213)
(authored by BJ)

This week Mike ventured north to join us, and brought along his friend
Jeri who has been playing for a long time but is relatively new to the
club scene. Along with Margaret, Ellen, Marsha, Iliana and myself, we
played 15 total games and 45 total bingos. Only one high non-bingo was
recorded this week--I extended QUA to QUAVERS for 69 points. Iliana had
the fortune of playing the triple-triple NARRATES against me for 113 and
the high play of the session.

Every time Mike plays, he seems to find at least one (and usually
multiple) juicy fun words. Tonight he played MOVIEOLA (also acceptable
spelled as MOVIOLA), which is a film editing device. It comes
originally from a trademarked device that was invented in 1924, and was
the first ever film editing machine. The Moviola company still exists
today, and is unsurprisingly located in Hollywood. But perhaps the most
unusual word played this week was in a game between Marsha and Jeri. In
fact, neither player realized the word had even been formed until later
in the game. The word was NN*, and was a mistake that appeared during a
parallel play of a longer word. Oops! :)

Our bingos also included: TORTOISE, SANTERA (a priestess of the santeria
religion), MORTISED (to MORTISE is to securely join timber), BREAKAGE,
ANTIPODE (an exact opposite), FOMITES (a FOMITE or FOMES# is a substance
capable of carrying infection), OUTSANG, TOETOES# (TOETOE# is a New
Zealand grass), UNSIZED, UNRIFLED (not rifled, meaning not robbed),
TANGELOS (a TANGELO is a citrus fruit, a cross between a tangerine and a
pomelo), DEVIOUS, RANDIER, COANCHOR, OVERHANG, REMELTED, MISTERS,
SCORNED, BINARIES, ORIENTAL, SAMOYED (a breed of sled dog), THREADED,
and SERIOUS.

Below is the board from the (CSW) game between Mike and BJ in which Mike
played MOVIEOLA.
