UVSC Session Report
July 9, 2018 (Session #188)
(authored by BJ)

We had another first-time drop-in attendee this week, a home Scrabble
player named Andrew who saw our blurb in the paper and thought he'd come
check us out while visiting the area for the week. He picked up the
timer fairly quickly and after a rough first game, played strongly in
his second game to make a close match out of it before finally
succumbing to experience. I'm proud to say I had zero phony bingos this
week after my five-phony shenanigans last week. Ellen challenged off my
one killer phony bingo possibility: SKEEZIER* at 2B that would've been
134 points and not even a triple-triple. I knew it was an actual slang
word in real life but was pretty sure it hadn't made it into the
Scrabble dictionary yet; still, I couldn't resist trying. Although that
spot was promptly blocked after I lost the challenge, I was luckily able
to get the high non-bingo of the night on my next play in a different
spot with ZEKS for 81.

At one point during a game, the word WOOD was situated in the top left
corner (at A1) with plenty of room for extension to the next TWS. There
are a few easy 8-letter words starting with WOOD (WOODSIER, WOODSMAN),
but there are many more less obvious ones. If you can think of 5 more
that's pretty good, 10 impressive, 20 amazing, and 30 insane! (Yes,
there are more than 30 in TWL alone, and that's just 8-letter ones.) As
it turned out, in the game itself we never did extend it, though nearly
so a couple of times.

Our bingo collection contained the following: EUCHRES, GUTSIER, SATIRES,
DEPICTS, AFREETS, SINGLES, SKINNIER, HEINIES, ANTEDATE, GRADATE,
VERIEST, TURNKEYS, OUTGIVE, MEANDERS, ZESTING (for 108 by Iliana for the
high play), ANIMATED, INOSITE, MERCIES, RADIANT, TWOFOLD, HEALINGS,
TABORINS, GLADIER, THROTTLE, SUNTANS, AIRIEST, SALLIED, REPLANT,
PIONEER, LEGALISE.
