UVSC Session Report
April 2, 2018 (Session #174)
(authored by BJ)

Scrabble has a number of terms describing word construction, including
hooks (front and back), extensions (front and back), and parallel
plays/stacking. But is there a term for connecting existing letters
together? I've heard "slotting" used to describe plays that involve
filling in a one-tile gap between words in a parallel fashion. A
slightly different kind of slotting occurred once, and nearly twice, in
one of our games this week. It involved extending a word by one tile to
connect it to another floating tile, making a new word two letters
longer than the original (and also making another word in the
perpendicular direction). For example, the word MARK could become
REMARK with the addition of an E if there happened to be an R two
squares in front of the M. Have a look at the (TWL) board below and see
if you can spot the word that was formed this way, as well as another
spot that is available for such an extension.

Margaret had another excellent outing, going 2-0, including a 470 game
in which she got down two bingos plus ZOOIER for 50 points. Iliana had
the high bingo with EQUATED for 124, her second consecutive week with a
124-point play. Ellen brought out her best against Iliana tonight,
scoring two high games against her: 460 and 447. I myself was very
happy to find and play two recently learned words as bingos: TALARIA and
PAIRIAL#, the latter of which was a game-winning out-play.

A selection of our other bingos: ENTOMBS, COUTERS, SANTERA, RENATURE,
LATHIER, TENURING, CATTIER, MONOMERS, UNPEGGED, SERJEANT, ERUDITES#,
FOGGERS, SOUNDER, BROGUES, and FRUITING.

Below is the (TWL) game between Ellen and I that featured a "slot
extension". (And even further below that are answers to last week's
question.)
